Quick disconnects

Z-1450 series Zero-Aire
Seaton-Wilson designed the Zero-Aire brand quick disconnect (QD) to be the unquestioned leader in advanced hydraulic, pneumatic and cooling system couplings. Its design characteristics provide values for leakage, spillage and air inclusion which are far lower than both commercial and military standards.

Eliminates leakage and spillage
Leakage is the loss of media over a period of time, expressed as drops or cc's-per-minute. Leakage is frequently caused by imperfect seating of a coupling or failure of an internal seal. Spillage is a one-time volumetric loss of media and is caused when media is trapped in voids in the coupling and then ejected upon final disconnection.

Leakage and spillage are dangerous when media is

  Reactive
  Flammable
  Electrically conductive
  Noxious or toxic
  Volume critical
  Slippery if spilt on floors

The unique safety-features of the Z-1450 QD make leakage all but impossible and reduces spillage to the lowest possible levels, as demonstrated in Table A.

Prevents air inclusion
Air inclusion happens when a connection artificially injects atmosphere into a system. In hydraulic systems air inclusion can lead to pump cavitation, poor heat transfer, low bulk modulus, dielectric breakdown, and temperature increases in high pressure systems. In pneumatic systems that rely on high purity or treated gases, air inclusion can contaminate major components.

Z-1450 QDs keep air out of your system. The seal in a Zero-Aire coupling is so complete that a typical half-inch coupling meets specs that are 250 times tougher than MIL standards. Table A shows typical air inclusion data for Zero-Aire and competitive QDs.

Superior design
Common "non-spill" QDs use a poppet valve/sliding sleeve design where the spring-driven sliding sleeve moves through an O-ring. The spring is usually sized so that it can overcome the normal friction of the O-ring. If, due to low temps, aging or degreasing, the O-ring friction increases to where it is greater than the force of the spring, the sleeve will hang up.

This hang up can cause inconvenient as well as potentially dangerous leaks.

The Z-1450 Zero-Aire QD has a patented, two-stage female valve cartridge that cannot open until the male half has been pushed beyond the interface O-ring. When disconnected, the valves close completely before the male half is pulled back past the O-ring (See Figure 1).

Operating pressure
Z-1450 series are designed to operate up to 3000 PSIG and higher. Choice of materials of construction is determined by fluid compatibility and pressure rating.

Operation
The Z-1450 series is a push-to-connect/pull-to-disconnect ball locking design.

Minimizing pressure drop
Seaton-Wilson uses an innovative technique to help maintain optimum pressure in low pressure systems. The internal flow area of low pressure Z-1450 is increased, without increasing the exterior dimensions or changing fitting sizes. Figures 2 and 3 compare typical pressure drops for standard high pressure hydraulic and low pressure coolant applications.

The fluid management experts
Starting with the development of the Zero-Aire® quick disconnect coupling in 1958, Seaton-Wilson has expanded its fluid management product line to include valves, fluid degassers, umbilicals and complete fluid networks featuring couplings, hoses, manifolds, electrical connectors, valves and other components. The company also provides complete single source sub-system design and manufacturing resources for the aircraft and aerospace industries.

Whatever your requirements, the experts at Seaton-Wilson can put Fluid Management to work for you.

Part number information
Seaton-Wilson uses the following system to clearly identify every Zero-Aire QD in the field. Table C gives a full description of this identification system.

Options for every need
Seaton-Wilson can supply Z-1450 QDs with a variety of standard and custom fittings, seal materials, pressure and dust caps and dust plugs. Zero-Aire QDs can also be integrated into pre-filled umbilical and hose assemblies which are then ready for installation into fluid networks.
